He has been teaching in many summer courses, for instance at Hailuoto camp of art in the beginning of 1960's. For Mikkola Kuusamo has become the most pleasant summercourse place of them all. He has returned to teach there every summer since the camp was first held in 1972.

Canyons, rapids and lakes in northeast part of Finland have often been starting point of his paintings. Lapland has been very close to Matti Mikkolas heart. Many of his trips during these years have been directed towards Teno and Ounas rivers, in winter time towards Kilpisjärvi, Posio, Luosto and Pyhätunturi.

Experiences, photographs, fast drawings and sketches made during these trips have given ground for working in the middle of city. Changing seasons, many faces of water and ice, spring after each other are heart-stirring again and again.

Mikkolas two most important public paintings are rather large wall paintings; "By the wings of bird", 1970, located at Profession school of Oulu and "Mountain and pine", 1994, located at the day care center of Ainola.

During his long career as an artist Matti Mikkola has taken part to hundreds of exhibitions in as well as outside of Finland. His paintings can be seen in collections of art museums, municipalities and companies.
